Room 503, Saturday Mid-Afternoon

Dōjima had listened to radio once she got up (late) this morning.

Dōjima was currently suppressing the desire to bang her head against the wall.

Red was an idiot.  Clearly, confronting her at work was giving Rikku 'time'.  Maybe she'd go throw a dictionary at his head later.  That might be amusing. 

Firing off a quick text message to Rikku, she tossed her phone on the nightstand and walked over to crack the window open just a bit, letting in some fresh air as she set about doing some spring cleaning.   Going through her clothes and getting rid of last seasons' stuff might be a fun distraction, since it meant she could go shopping later.

Reno was mostly sober.

Reno was mostly sober with a roll of duct tape, dead leaves on his clothing, and little pieces of LCD-monitor in his hair.

It had been a venting night. What?

He knocked on the doorframe, glancing into the room.

"I'm done with the duct tape, Doji."

Dōjima looked over at him, and calmly, carefully, picked up the thesaurus on her desk, looking at it idly before chucking it right at his head. Hard.

"No, Red, you aren't," she replied, dusting off her hands. "You look like something a Witch dragged in. Maybe we need to start with small words, like the definition of 'fixed', or 'time', because I don't think you've managed either one yet, and that was what I lent you the tape for."

The last thing that Reno really expected was to have books thrown at him.

So when it clocked him a good one in the forehead, bumping his goggles askew and leaving a solid red welt above his eye, all he could really manage to do was stare at her stupidly.

"Ow?"

The rest would sink in, there. Give it a moment.

"You just threw a book at my head."

No, really. A moment more.

"They caught me on radio, didn't they?"

"Your boss forget to teach you how to duck?" she asked, walking over to reach up to poke at the welt. "Yes, Reno, the squirrels see everything. You're a radio host, you should know that."

Sighing, she gave him a shove towards the bed, kicking the door part-way shut as she resumed her cleaning. "Oh, sit down, and quit looking at me like a wounded puppy. What the hell were you thinking, genius?"

Reno took a seat on the bed that he'd been shoved toward, and he frowned and shook his head.

"At first, I was thinkin' that I'd just go and see her. Maybe that was enough time, I dunno, zoto." He shrugged. "And then I couldn't go in. So I stood outside. Wasn't gonna bother her. Huntin' her down at work or whatever was a stupid idea. I have those."

He shrugged again.

"And then she saw me anyhow. Did you really have to throw a book at me?" He put a hand to his forehead, tenderly, and then checked his fingers. Okay. Not bleeding. But damn.

"No, but it made me feel better," Dōjima replied, taking a seat next to him. "What happened? Radio didn't say anything beyond that she invited you in, but you don't look like you had a good night."

"We talked." He shrugged, gave a shake of his head. It was all good. Really. "Talking's good. We did the talking thing. She said things, I answered things, I probably should'a just left, but my head was gonna explode if I didn't tell her something, yo."

He picked a twig off of his shoulder and eyed it for a moment.

"And the leaves an' shit are from venting. Kicked the ever-lovin' shit outta my laptop out in the preserve, is all." He grinned faintly. "It was laughin' at me."

Nobody ever said that Reno was entirely sane.

"Of course it was." Yurika pinched the bridge of her nose to keep from laughing. It wasn't funny. It wasn't.

Oh hell, yes it was.

"Anyone ever tell you that you're insane, yo?"

He stuck out his tongue out and grinned. It was a habit, dammit.

"Not as often as maybe they should," he admitted. "You want your duct tape back or not?"

"Can I throw it at you?" she asked rethorically. "Kidding." Mostly.

"You feel any better? Say what you needed to?"

"Some," he replied with a shrug. "I'll try again. Maybe not right away, but that was a note I kinda can't just leave it sittin' on. She can have time, now. At least she knows I'm not just throwin' in the towel."

He handed back the tape and then braced himself to have it bounced off of his head.

"Next time you get another brilliant idea like that, stop a random girl, ask her if it's a good plan, and see what happens. If you get slapped, don't try it, okay?"

Taking the tape, she eyed it for a moment before gently bopping him on the nose with it and then placing it well out of throwing range. "Or you can just call me. For the record, 'time' is usually classified as 'more than a day', at least in girl-speak. She works at the weapon-store, right? You're lucky you aren't missing a limb."

Romeo stopped by after detention. "How badly would it annoy you if I smoked?" he asked, pack of cigarettes already in hand.

"Me? Not at all. Jen might have issue with it though." Yurika looked up from the clothes she was sorting and grinned. "Bad detention?"

Romeo thought about it, and decided he could deal with an irritated Jen. "She can get me to pay to clean her linens, if she's upset," he promised, but opened the window and stayed distinctly on Yurika's side of the room before lighting up.

He took a long, appreciative drag before nodding. "They made me a newt," he said, not really explaining anything.

"Ano, a what?" she asked, brow creasing in puzzlement. "You mean the little-lizard-thinggie? How can they make you a lizard?"

"How were we children?" Romeo pointed out, waving his cigarette perhaps too close to the modded, omg curtains. "There was the holy grail being thrown down at me, and I caught it, and then I was a lizard for a while."

"And before that there was a quest."

"There was a what? With a what?" Dōjima abandoned her cleaning to sit on the bed, watching him. "Okay, start over. You had a quest. Why was there a quest?"

Romeo flailed, took a puff, and started again. "It was some sort of role-playing thing," he said, with some distaste. "We were King Arthur."

"And the steps were -" he ticked them off on the fingers not holding his cigarette "- a sword fight, being mocked by a mad Frenchman, a cave with a beast in it, a bridge with questions, a boat, and then back to the castle and the mad Frenchman. And at the end, he threw down what seemed to be the Holy Grail we sought."

"And then I was a newt."

Dōjima grinned, obviously amused. "I thought you said all Frenchmen were mad," she replied. "All your friends at the Moulin Rouge were definitely special."

"I still don't get how they made you a newt? Was it magic? I can't believe they'd use magic on students, that's just wrong," she complained. "That's a really weird detention. Whatever happened to sitting in study hall, and being forced to write out lines?"

"Maybe they all are," Romeo mused, managing the slightest inclination toward a smile. "Or at least, I only meet the mad ones."

He shrugged. "The whole thing is a kind of computer program. Perhaps it only made me think I was a newt. On the whole, I would rather write lines."

"Something along the lines of 'I will not punch Sokka for being a half-wit' fifty times? So much easier than chasing after a computer-generated cup." Dōjima hopped off the bed to stand next to him, away from where he held the cigarette. "Well, it's done now, at least, and you're never ever going to do it again. Right?"

"I spoke to Sokka," Romeo said, sounding only slightly put out. "He said he only wanted to be, quote, 'a little annoying.'" He made what would have been a larger gesture was he not still holding the last of his cigarette. "His idea of that and mine may just differ, but no, I won't hit him again. Not if the cost is being a newt."

"If I can avoid detention, I will," he vowed.

"Avoiding detention means you can stay in bed late on Saturday," she suggested, sliding one arm around his waist and winking. "I can think of worse fates, can't you?"
