The Phantasm Club [Tokyo, Sunday Evening]

The club was already packed, the young and beautiful population of Tokyo out to drink and dance the night away.

It had been chosen as a meeting place due to its central location, but it wasn't hard to see why it was one of Dōjima's favorite hangouts.

"Not make you wait, aijin, but maybe find a spot that isn't quite so scandalous. What if the photographers spot us again?" Dōjima couldn't help teasing, bumping at his foot with hers.

Then the second thing he said registered and her eyes went wide. "No. No no no absolutely not."

"Then your father takes away a credit card and is grateful again that you're half a world away," Romeo claimed.

Her widened eyes were met with narrowed ones from him. "I'm coming, Yurika. And if you keep saying no I'll -- I'll come to the Tokyo in my world, that I may at least be geographically close even if our universes are awry."

Yurika clenched her hands and scowled at him. "Are you completely mental? Did Ava Amano hit you on the head yesterday?"

"And that's exactly why I'm coming," he scowled right back at her. "So you have something in your world that's not the hunt and being a Dojima. If I was hit on the head, it only helped me see more clearly."

"That's why I need you as far away from here as possible," she hissed. "I can't have anything outside of that. I am not a regular Hunter, Romeo. If I was, we wouldn't have had to go to Rome this weekend."

"I am a spy. The slightest hint of anything outside of my cover, and I am dead. I'll be another socialite with an 'accidental' overdose of some type. So no, you are not coming."

Romeo had to fight to keep his voice low. "And an airhead rich American boyfriend doesn't fit into your cover? You can date other people if you have to, or I can live across the country. But I must be there for you."

"And if they decide to use you to get to me? I said no. I am not going to put you in that position." Yurika shook her head firmly. "That is a terrible idea on so many levels, and you know it."

"I can take care of myself," Romeo insisted quietly, arms folded. His whole body tensed as he thought about this.

He decided to play dirty. "Would you feel betetr if I went back to Verona?"

That was dirty, and knew it.

"You wouldn't," she answered. "You can't, and you know it."

"So what would you have me do?" he whined. "Home is Verona, or home is with you. Would you really have me be completely alone after I graduate?"

"You have more options than that," she snapped, trying to stomp down on the flash of guilt. "And you wouldn't be alone, you have friends."

"I'm not going to Gaia, and Rikku's world would be dull for me, if it even exists," Romeo pointed out. "Ought I be a ninja with Ino? You know she'd laugh at the thought."

He rubbed his eyes. "Do you even want to be with me after we graduate?"

Because, clearly, she had to make that decision now.

"You don't loose friends just by hopping worlds," Yurika said sharply. "You can live in Mantua or Mexico or anywhere but here, and still not be alone."

"You know what, we aren't talking about this now. We aren't." She tossed her hair over her shoulder and made to stand. "I'm your girlfriend, but you can't make demands like that. Not if you want to keep me."

She had enough men in her life to boss her around without having him push her boundaries right now.

"But in Mantua or Mexico I wouldn't have you," Romeo claimed. A year before, or even six months before, he might have threatened suicide to make his point here, but death was too serious to him now to let him do that.

He raised his hands in surrender. "We aren't talking about it now," he agreed. "But know that when the day comes for you to portal back here for good, if I am not with you it won't be because I didn't try."

She relaxed slightly as he backed off, and Yurika rewarded him with a tired smile. He could try all he wanted, the Dōjima family had a knack for stubbornness.

"If you lived in Mexico, it would be completely typical of me to blow off work for a week to go play in the sun," she joked. "So don't give me that excuse."

"Maybe we should go back there for the semester vacation, skip Christmas break with our families and go find somewhere tropical. What do you say?"

He smiled back at her, all innocence. She might not want to put her familial stubbornness up against that of the Montagues. "I say I wish Christmas break were tomorrow," he answered. "My father will be upset, of course, but that's almost an argument in favor of the idea."

Yurika rolled her eyes and made the international hand signal for 'blah blah blah...' "Tell him you're keeping the peace in Verona for the holiday," she said dryly. "You think it's the best gift you could give Ben and Rosaline for their first Christmas as newlyweds, or something like that."

Romeo nodded slowly, digesting the idea. "Have I told you lately," he asked, leaning forward, "how very much I like the way you think?"

He would kiss her, if she would let him. Not in surrender, but because this was a truce and he was not foolish enough to pass it up.

Truce, for now. If he was foolish enough to bring it up again, she would deal with it then.

"Not lately," she sighed, leaning a bit closer and reaching out to place her hand on his hip. "What is it you like so much?"

"I like that you can always come up with ideas," he said, leaning into her touch, needing it. "I like that you're fast on your feet. I like that you're smart but don't need to constantly show it off."

He nuzzled into her. "I might just like you."

"Mmm." The nuzzling was appreciated, and Yurika decided to reciprocate.

"You like me, huh?" she breathed, shifting closer and letting her hand drift along his side. "Lucky me."

"I would say lucky me," Romeo said, relaxing under her hand. The future would come soon enough, and could be worried about in due course. "Odoranai?"

"Hai," she answered, smirking at him slightly. Yes, to all the meanings of the word.

First, however, she had to kiss him. Yurika leaned in to catch his lips in a nice, long, slow kiss. A kiss to let him know she wasn't still angry.

Well, mostly not-angry. He could probably charm his way back into her good graces by the end of the night.

It was a useful word, that way.

He kissed her back deeply to say he wasn't angry, either. He had more than half year to make his case, and kisses would never hurt it.

When they were finally forced to break for air, Yurika gave a breathless giggle.

"You better take me out on the dance floor, signore Montague," she purred, nuzzing at his neck again. "Before I end up taking you back to the hotel."
