Room 503, Saturday Mid-Afternoon

Dōjima had listened to radio once she got up (late) this morning.

Dōjima was currently suppressing the desire to bang her head against the wall.

Red was an idiot. Clearly, confronting her at work was giving Rikku 'time'. Maybe she'd go throw a dictionary at his head later. That might be amusing.

Firing off a quick text message to Rikku, she tossed her phone on the nightstand and walked over to crack the window open just a bit, letting in some fresh air as she set about doing some spring cleaning. Going through her clothes and getting rid of last seasons' stuff might be a fun distraction, since it meant she could go shopping later.

"Ano, a what?" she asked, brow creasing in puzzlement. "You mean the little-lizard-thinggie? How can they make you a lizard?"

"How were we children?" Romeo pointed out, waving his cigarette perhaps too close to the ~~modded, omg~~ curtains. "There was the holy grail being thrown down at me, and I caught it, and then I was a lizard for a while."

"And before that there was a quest."

"There was a what? With a what?" Dōjima abandoned her cleaning to sit on the bed, watching him. "Okay, start over. You had a quest. Why was there a quest?"

Romeo flailed, took a puff, and started again. "It was some sort of role-playing thing," he said, with some distaste. "We were King Arthur."

"And the steps were -" he ticked them off on the fingers not holding his cigarette "- a sword fight, being mocked by a mad Frenchman, a cave with a beast in it, a bridge with questions, a boat, and then back to the castle and the mad Frenchman. And at the end, he threw down what seemed to be the Holy Grail we sought."

"And then I was a newt."

Dōjima grinned, obviously amused. "I thought you said all Frenchmen were mad," she replied. "All your friends at the Moulin Rouge were definitely special."

"I still don't get how they made you a newt? Was it magic? I can't believe they'd use magic on students, that's just wrong," she complained. "That's a really weird detention. Whatever happened to sitting in study hall, and being forced to write out lines?"

"Maybe they all are," Romeo mused, managing the slightest inclination toward a smile. "Or at least, I only meet the mad ones."

He shrugged. "The whole thing is a kind of computer program. Perhaps it only made me think I was a newt. On the whole, I would rather write lines."

"Something along the lines of 'I will not punch Sokka for being a half-wit' fifty times? So much easier than chasing after a computer-generated cup." Dōjima hopped off the bed to stand next to him, away from where he held the cigarette. "Well, it's done now, at least, and you're never ever going to do it again. Right?"

"I spoke to Sokka," Romeo said, sounding only slightly put out. "He said he only wanted to be, quote, 'a little annoying.'" He made what would have been a larger gesture was he not still holding the last of his cigarette. "His idea of that and mine may just differ, but no, I won't hit him again. Not if the cost is being a newt."

"If I can avoid detention, I will," he vowed.

"Avoiding detention means you can stay in bed late on Saturday," she suggested, sliding one arm around his waist and winking. "I can think of worse fates, can't you?"

He could, and that got him to find an empty can to ditch his smoke in so he could greet her properly. Which he did, snaking his arms around her waist into an embrace.

"I didn't like swordfighting with the knight," he confessed. "Or, rather I didn't like how easily I did it. Even though I know it was just a game, he ..." Romeo stopped, closed his eyes, drew a breath. "He said one of the last things Mercutio said, by chance. It jarred me to hear it, and jarred me more that I went on fighting."

Yurika stepped closer into the embrace, moving to lay her head against his chest. "That...wow. Are you, I mean, how..." she trailed off, unable to finish the thought. "No more detentions for you. Ever."

"Never," he agreed, massaging her back in small circles. "I think he was meant to be comic, his limbs came off as if attached by Velcro, but ..." and there weren't words, really. "I'm fine." He was. Mostly.

"Right. Fine." Yurika shook her head and tugged him towards her bed, moving quickly to toss stuff to the floor. "Maybe you're fine, but that really creeps me out. Can we just, I dunno, sit?"

"It was creepy. It just got sort of overriden by 'newt,' " Romeo reported as he sat, reaching to hold her hand. He leaned into her, not feeling like there was much more he could say about detention, really.

"What were you doing here?" he asked, gesturing at the piles of stuff now on the floor.

"Spring cleaning, hoping it would clear my brain a bit," she admitted. "Sorting out clothes to keep, clothes to send home, and stuff to donate. I try to clean out my closets every year, to make room for more shopping adventures."

"It's not working. The brain-sorting, I mean."

He nodded slowly, then squeezed her hand. "There's been too much going on," he said. "Might take more than a trip to Salvation Army to send it off."

"I, ah, threw a book at Reno," she admitted quietly. "He stopped by while you were in detention, and I totally nailed him in the head."

Surprise forced a short burst of laughter, a dry "Ha!" out of Romeo.

Then: "I can't say he hasn't earned it."

"Radio said he went to see Rikku at work yesterday, then he shows up this morning looking completely bedraggled and disreputable, worse than usual, to return my duct tape. It wasn't hard to figure out that it hadn't gone well. So, I threw the thesaurus at him." She shrugged slightly. "It helped."

Romeo facepalmed. "He should have waited for her to find him," he said. "Or at least ended the conversation when it turned bad. But, Jesu, I fear what he may have done."

he glanced around for the thesaurus. "Big book."

"He said he had things he needed say, which is fair, he has the right to say them. I might have pointed out that lurking around her work might not be the best place to say it." Dōjima winced. "By throwing the book. But I really really do feel better now, and he knows it was dumb."

"He apparently got roaring drunk, took his laptop into the preserve, and smashed the hell out of it." Yurika fidgeted nervously. "You know, far be it from me to deprive someone of what they need. I know I've gotten drunk more than a few times to cope with shit, but, well, I'm worried."

"He has the right to say them, perhaps he even should say them, but if it went so badly he was taking it out on his laptop ..." He sighed, leaned into her shoulder. "It worries me too. Not just the drinking."

"Do you think he would go home?" Because that, right there, was Romeo's biggest fear.

Yurika shook her head negatively. "No, I don't. We made a dare for graduation. I think he wants to stay."

"Good," Romeo said firmly. "If he's here, if he wants to stay, at least things are that much better."

"He seemed a lot more resolved to win her back, and a lot less doom-and-gloom today," Yurika replied, snuggling closer. "I even managed to make him laugh. Now we just need a magic spell for world peace, and we'll be all set."
